Cultivar name:

Phormium ‘Maori Sunrise’ (syn ‘Rainbow Sunrise’)

Originator:

Selected by Mrs M Jones, New Zealand Flax Hybridisers, Tauranga about 1981 from seedlings raised from Phormium Rainbow Hybrid seed marketed by Mr J Burton of Hamilton.

Leaf colour

Red variegated

Upper surface:

Mostly pinkish-red but the margins and occasional stripes are greyish-brown.

Lower surface:

Generally darker than the upper surface and with a red-brown midrib.

Comments:

The older leaves fade to yellowish-brown and there is a tendency for this plant to revert to plain greyish-brown leaves.

Published descriptions

HEE

 This is a low spreading plant with leaves 80 X 3-4 cm, central colour is salmon pink new growth fading to pale yellow, a narrow bronze-green band runs down the margin.

 Leaves thinly striped bronzy green and salmon orange. Moderately narrow, gracile, erect leaves reach 3’

BUR

 Red, pink and bronze.
