Introduction |

|
Fernwood is a 3-acre smallholding located in the village of Peters Marland, near Great Torrington, Devon. We are about 5 miles from RHS Gardens Rosemoor. We have been collecting, growing and studying houseleeks for more than 30 years and our present collection contains over 1100 varieties. In 1998, our collections of Sempervivum, Jovibarba and Rosularia were awarded National Collection® status by the National Council for the Conservation of Plants & Gardens (NCCPG). Our Phormium collection was also awarded National Collection® status in January 2002 At the nursery we propagate plants from our collections for sale by mail order, (Sempervivum, Jovibarba, Rosularia only), at plant fairs, shows and at the nursery. We welcome visitors to view the National Collections® or to purchase plants but please telephone first (01805 601446) to make sure that we will be there.
The best time to buy houseleeks is during the late spring, summer and early autumn. Plants are then growing actively and rapidly become established after repotting. Colours are usually brightest during the summer although some develop their best colours in the winter. In the summer the "arachnoideum" varieties are densely covered with white cobweb but during the winter this will disappear. We normally start sending mail order plants towards the end of April and continue until the end of October, or later if weather permits. We can send plants during the winter but they will not show their best colour or form and they will be slower to establish.
